In the bottom picture, you can see the babies on the CPAP machines. There are varying levels of breathing assistance that NICU babies need. The most help being full intibation (tubes down their throats, etc), then CPAP machines, then nose canulas (little plug things that go in their noses).  Luckily our babies did not have to have the full intibation. They both came out screaming at the top of their lungs and breathing on their own. They received nose canulas shortly after birth to help them out (which is pretty standard with preemies). Then on Friday, they did have to be put on the next level of assistance, the CPAP machines. This is very common for preemies to start out breathing almost fully on their own and then regress a little. They just get a little excited and exert too much energy and then need some help. They were on the CPAP machines for two days and came off on Sunday and went back to just the nose canulas. 

We were so lucky with their lung development in that as soon as it became likely they were going to be coming early, I was given steroid shots at 28 weeks and again right before their birth that helped greatly develop their lungs for their early entry into the world.
